The History of the european public and urban space. A Walking Tour.
The aim of this study trip is to investigate first hand the parks, squares and arcades of Paris in relation to the history and formation of early european public space and later more contemporary conceptual manifestations of park design from the 80s, 90s and 2000’s. Culminating in the most contemporary of public spaces – the occupied square.
The parks we intend to visit are the the Palais Royal, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, the Bois de Boulogne, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Pere Lachaise cemetery, Parc La Villette, Parc André Citroën, the Jardin du Luxembourg, Les Halles, the 19C arcades made famous by Walter Benjamin in the 2nd Arrondissement and the Place de la Republique at night which is part of the Nuit Debout occupation.
We will be walking a lot on this trip so please bring good walking shoes and light rainwear.
Complaining about the amount of walking will not be tolerated.
